opening ceremony was founded in 2002 by carol lim and humberto leon.

each year they select a country to feature in the store. the unique commercial and cultural character of a visiting country is represented by carefully deciding on 15 to 20 emerging designers from that particular place, and mimicking the modern day olympics – designers from one country versus another.

in addition to hosting the international fashion designers, opening ceremony imports from each country local ephemera and traditional bric-a-brac hand-picked from flea markets, vintage shops and various stops in their travels.
